시간의 겹과 덩어리
최근 유년기를 보낸 장소로 돌아와 살면서 나의 유년기를 마주함과 동시에, 무수히 많은 시간을 함께 보낸 사람들을 떠나보내는 일을 겪게 되니 여러 가지 감정이 북받쳐 오른다.
덩어리로 뭉쳐 응어리지려는 감정들을, 내가 가진 재주로 나름의 예를 갖춰 인정하고 표현하여 흘러가도록 하고 있다.
이번 전시 작품들은 사라지는 것들, 다시 볼 수 없지만 내 마음에 큰 흔적을 남긴 것들을 기리고 새겨 표석으로 남기고 내 마음에는 응어리로 남지 않도록 하는, 극복과 정화 작업에 다름 아닌 것 같다.

Layers and Masses of Time
Having returned to live in the place where I spent my childhood, I find myself confronting my early years head-on — while at the same time experiencing the loss of people with whom I have shared countless hours. Many feelings rise up at once, threatening to clot and harden into a mass. I try to acknowledge them with the skills I have, to give them their due, to express them, and to let them pass through.
The works in this exhibition are, I think, nothing less than an act of overcoming and purification — a way of honoring and inscribing the things that are disappearing, the things I will never see again yet that have left a deep mark on me, setting them down as gravestones, so that they do not remain as a hardened knot inside my heart.

정직성의 붉은 집, 풍납동 시절

풍납동의 '붉은 집'이 소환한 '연립주택'
정직성 작가의 이번 전시 《표석》은 24년 전에 ‘정직성’이라는 이름을 알린 시리즈작 ‘연립주택’을 작품 ‘붉은 집’에 담아 소회한다. 작가의 작업 세계와 그의 작업을 지켜보며 탐구하고 있는 연구자로서 큰 변곡점이 되는 작업이라는 생각을 지울 수 없다. 당시 붉은 벽돌 하나하나를 쌓은 구축적인 형태는 덩어리진 채 놓여 있다. 마치 허허벌판이나 언덕 위에 한 채의 연립주택이 오롯이 서 있는 형태이다. 배경과 구분되는 검붉은색의 브러시스트로크는 ‘연립주택’에 비해 단순화된 면으로 변했지만 붓질 하나하나가 적확한 위치에 놓여 꽤 명확한 실루엣을 형성한다. 지난해 11월경 정직성 작가는 그의 거주지와 작업실을 풍납동으로 옮겼다. 마흔여덟 번째 이사이자 사건을 기념하듯 풍납동에 있는 공간지은에서 《풍납이사 MOVE BACK HOME》 개인전을 열었다. 그 이후에 열리는 이번 전시는 묘비를 의미하는 “표석”이다. 실제 35kg에 달하는 글씨를 새긴 시멘트 표석 3점이 직관적으로 등장한다. 3년 전 《매일매일의 만화경》 개인전을 준비할 때 정직성 작가에게 “헤드스톤”, “장소성”이라는 단어는 대화 중에 어렵지 않게 들을 수 있었다. 이사와 일상 그리고 일련의 정서를 형성하고 있는 지금, 그 의미가 좀 더 선명하게 드러나는 걸 보니 정직성 작가의 작업은 정말 그의 정신적·물리적 지형과 함께한다는 것을 새삼 느낀다. 지금 작가가 생활하고 있는 풍납동은 그가 유년 시절을 보낸 둔촌동과 가까운 지역이며 백제 시조 온조가 한강 유역에 세운 최초의 도읍지가 ‘서울 풍납동 토성’(사적 제11호)이다. 풍납동 일대는 1960년대 이후 도시로 변화하였지만 원래 토성의 높이는 15m에 달하고 성벽 길이는 약 3.7km에 달했을 것으로 추정한다. 다만 현재는 7~9미터 내외로 2km 길이 성벽만 남아 있다. * 정직성 작가의 작업실 방문 때 풍납동 일대를 함께 걸으며 〈붉은 집〉의 모티프가 된 연립주택들을 볼 수 있었다. 풍납백제문화공원과 풍납동 일대 역사관광도시 계획 수립으로 시내에서 보던 최소 2m 이격으로 빼곡히 늘어선 연립주택과는 달리, 풍납동의 연립주택은 한 채를 온전히 사방에서 볼 수 있었던 것이다.
애호, 기량, 회화가 이룬 임시적인 삼각주
이번 전시에서는 회화 외에 서예나 시멘트 입체, 테라코타 두상 등이 등장한다. 작가의 기존 작업에서 꽤 전위적으로 비칠 수 있지만, 이미 기량을 펼친 바 있는 매체 작업이다. 2020년 홍성 이응노레지던시 작가로 활동 당시 도자와 서예에 집중할 수 있는 환경이 주어진 것을 계기로 시작된 작업이기도 하다. 2020~2021년에 발표한 〈가슴에 맺힌 편지〉 서예 시리즈를 비롯하여, 슬픈 머리, 반반머리, 큰 머리, 작은 머리, 뚜껑 열린 머리, 못생긴 사과머리, 흰 머리 등 ‘머리’ 시리즈 테라코타 작품이 있었다. 2025년과 2026년에 제작한 머리들은 자소상, 그리고 가까운 가족과 친구를 모델로 한 것이다. 정직성 작가는 2019년부터 ‘현대자개회화’라고 명명하는 공예적 재료로 통용된 자개 소재를 파동, 기후, 기계 등 작가만의 추상적이고 현대적인 도상으로 자율적으로 표현하며 주목받았다. 그 기저에는 자개장을 수집할 정도로 깊은 개인의 애호 문화가 있다. 《표석》은 정직성 작가만의 폭발적이고 거침없는 추동력이 최근 3년간 겪은 일련의 감정 소용돌이 안에서 다소 늦춰지는 가운데 생긴 작업물이라고 해도 무방하다. 그동안 그가 쌓은 애호의 문화와 다방면으로 행한 기량 그리고 그의 추상 회화는 그렇게 빠른 속도로 발전하고 전진해왔고, 고통의 문턱에서 강의 느린 유속으로 생기는 삼각주처럼 또 다른 생태계를 형성하며 새로운 국면에 접어들고 있다. 이 임시적인 지형에 굳이 표석이라는 상징을 세운 이유는, 자신의 현존을 증명하려는 것이 아니다. 오히려 죽음을 기억하고 돌아보는 메멘토 모리에 가깝다. 한 인간의 역사가 다른 이에게 남기는 흔적이 애도처럼 때때로 떠올리고 극복하고 되새기는 과정임을 기억하는 일이며, 지금 자신이 밟고 있는 땅이 수많은 이들이 거쳐 간 한시적인 영토임을 인식하는 일이기도 하다. 이를테면 〈봄눈 202601, 202602〉, 〈봄산 202603, 202604〉을 통해 작가는 설령 높고 높은 태산일지라도 영원할 수 없음을 은유한다. 그래서 표석은 결국 죽음이 아닌 삶의 자리를 되돌아보게 하는 신비에 대한 이야기이다. 삶의 의미를 환기하거나 되짚게 하는 “표석”은 정직성 작가의 삶과 작업의 세계에서 어떤 한 부표이자 지표로서 작용할 것이다. 다만 정직성 작가가 생각하는 이 모든 것을 아우르는 숭고라는 거시적인 공감은 좀 더 시간이 흐른 뒤에 알 수 있을 것 같다. 인간의 역사와 진리를 깨닫는 것은 지극히 개인적인 감정 안에서 이루어지는 동시에 시간이 소요되는 일이기 때문이다. 먼 훗날 지금의 《표석》이 정직성 작가의 “풍납동 시절”을 이루는 중요한 시발점에 있는 작업이라는 것을 예고해 본다.

'Red House' in Pungnapdong Summons 'Row Houses'
Jeong Zik Seong's current exhibition ‘PYOSEOK’ revisits ‘Row Houses’—the series that first brought his name to prominence twenty-four years ago—now channeled through the work ‘Red House’. As a researcher who has long followed and explored his practice, I cannot shake the feeling that this marks a significant turning point in his work. The constructive forms built brick by brick retain their dense, massed presence, standing as a single row house might on an open plain or atop a hill. The dark crimson brushstrokes, set apart from their background, have grown more simplified compared to Row Houses, yet each mark falls in precisely the right place, forming a remarkably clear silhouette.
Last November, Jeong Zik Seong relocated both his home and studio to Pungnapdong—his forty-eighth move. As if in commemoration, he held the solo exhibition ‘Pungnapdong Move / MOVE BACK HOME’ at Gonggan Jieun in the neighborhood. The present exhibition follows that one. Its title, “PYOSEOK”, means Headstone: three cement markers, each weighing thirty-five kilograms and inscribed with text, appear in the space with quiet directness. Even three years ago, while preparing his solo show 《A Daily Kaleidoscope》, words like "headstone" and "sense of place" surfaced naturally in conversation with him. Watching these meanings grow sharper now—amid his moves, his daily rhythms, and the feelings they have accumulated—I am struck again by how faithfully his work travels alongside his mental and physical terrain.
Pungnapdong, where he now lives, lies close to Dunchon-dong, where he spent his childhood. It is also the site of the Pungnap Earthen Fortification (Historic Site No. 11), believed to be the earliest capital established by Onjo, founder of Baekje, along the Han River. The area urbanized after the 1960s, but the original walls are estimated to have reached fifteen meters in height, stretching approximately 3.7 kilometers in length. Today, only about two kilometers remain, standing seven to nine meters tall.*
On a visit to his studio, we walked through the neighborhood together, and he showed me the row houses that became the motif for ‘Red House’. Unlike the tightly packed buildings of central Seoul—separated by the minimum two-meter gap required by regulation—Pungnapdong's row houses could be seen whole, from all four sides, a quality made possible by the area's ongoing historical preservation planning.
The Temporary Delta Formed by Passion, Craft, and Painting
This exhibition brings together not only painting but calligraphy, cement sculpture, and terracotta heads. These may appear avant-garde within the context of his existing practice, yet all are media he has worked with before. His residency at the Lee Ungno Residence in Hongseong in 2020 provided the conditions to focus on ceramics and calligraphy, and that became the starting point for this thread of work. From that period come the calligraphy series ‘Letters Held in the Heart’ (2020–2021) and the terracotta ‘Head’ series—among them ‘Sad Head’, ‘Half-and-Half Head’, ‘Big Head’, ‘Small Head’, ‘Open-Lid Head’, ‘Ugly Apple Head’, and ‘White Head’. The heads made in 2025 and 2026 take as their subjects self-portraits alongside those closest to him: family and friends.
Since 2019, Jeong Zik Seong has attracted attention for his ‘Contemporary Najeon Painting’—a practice that takes mother-of-pearl, long associated with traditional craft, and channels it into an abstract and distinctly contemporary visual language of waves, climate, and machinery. Underlying this is a deep personal devotion, one that extends to collecting mother-of-pearl cabinets.
‘PYOSEOK’ can fairly be described as work that emerged while the explosive, unrelenting drive so characteristic of Jeong Zik Seong slowed within the emotional turbulence of the past three years. The culture of passionate collecting, the skills developed across many disciplines, and an abstract painting practice that has advanced at remarkable speed—all of it has reached a threshold of pain and, like a delta forming where a river loses its momentum, is now shaping a new ecology and entering a new phase.
The reason for planting the symbol of a gravestone in this temporary terrain is not to prove one's own existence. It is closer to a cry of *memento mori*—a summons to remember and reflect on death. It is a remembering that the traces a human life leaves in others resemble grief: something to be revisited, worked through, and carried. And it is a recognition that the ground beneath one's feet is a temporary territory, passed through by countless people who once believed it would never change. Works such as *Spring Snow 202601, 202602* and *Spring Mountain 202603, 202604* offer that very metaphor: even the highest mountain cannot endure forever.
‘PYOSEOK’, then, is ultimately not a story about death, but about the mystery that turns us back toward life. As a marker—PYOSEOK—that recalls and renews the meaning of living, it will serve as a buoy and a point of orientation within the world of Jeong Zik Seong's life and work. Whether the full resonance he reaches for—something approaching the sublime—will be widely felt is something only time will reveal. To grasp the histories and truths of human experience is a process that unfolds within deeply personal feeling, and it requires time. Looking back from some future point, I venture to say that ‘PYOSEOK’ will be recognized as the defining starting point of Jeong Zik Seong's Pungnapdong years.

정직성의 붉은 집, 풍납동 시절

풍납동의 '붉은 집'이 소환한 '연립주택'
정직성 작가의 이번 전시 《표석》은 24년 전에 ‘정직성’이라는 이름을 알린 시리즈작 ‘연립주택’을 작품 ‘붉은 집’에 담아 소회한다. 작가의 작업 세계와 그의 작업을 지켜보며 탐구하고 있는 연구자로서 큰 변곡점이 되는 작업이라는 생각을 지울 수 없다. 당시 붉은 벽돌 하나하나를 쌓은 구축적인 형태는 덩어리진 채 놓여 있다. 마치 허허벌판이나 언덕 위에 한 채의 연립주택이 오롯이 서 있는 형태이다. 배경과 구분되는 검붉은색의 브러시스트로크는 ‘연립주택’에 비해 단순화된 면으로 변했지만 붓질 하나하나가 적확한 위치에 놓여 꽤 명확한 실루엣을 형성한다. 지난해 11월경 정직성 작가는 그의 거주지와 작업실을 풍납동으로 옮겼다. 마흔여덟 번째 이사이자 사건을 기념하듯 풍납동에 있는 공간지은에서 《풍납이사 MOVE BACK HOME》 개인전을 열었다. 그 이후에 열리는 이번 전시는 묘비를 의미하는 “표석”이다. 실제 35kg에 달하는 글씨를 새긴 시멘트 표석 3점이 직관적으로 등장한다. 3년 전 《매일매일의 만화경》 개인전을 준비할 때 정직성 작가에게 “헤드스톤”, “장소성”이라는 단어는 대화 중에 어렵지 않게 들을 수 있었다. 이사와 일상 그리고 일련의 정서를 형성하고 있는 지금, 그 의미가 좀 더 선명하게 드러나는 걸 보니 정직성 작가의 작업은 정말 그의 정신적·물리적 지형과 함께한다는 것을 새삼 느낀다. 지금 작가가 생활하고 있는 풍납동은 그가 유년 시절을 보낸 둔촌동과 가까운 지역이며 백제 시조 온조가 한강 유역에 세운 최초의 도읍지가 ‘서울 풍납동 토성’(사적 제11호)이다. 풍납동 일대는 1960년대 이후 도시로 변화하였지만 원래 토성의 높이는 15m에 달하고 성벽 길이는 약 3.7km에 달했을 것으로 추정한다. 다만 현재는 7~9미터 내외로 2km 길이 성벽만 남아 있다. * 정직성 작가의 작업실 방문 때 풍납동 일대를 함께 걸으며 〈붉은 집〉의 모티프가 된 연립주택들을 볼 수 있었다. 풍납백제문화공원과 풍납동 일대 역사관광도시 계획 수립으로 시내에서 보던 최소 2m 이격으로 빼곡히 늘어선 연립주택과는 달리, 풍납동의 연립주택은 한 채를 온전히 사방에서 볼 수 있었던 것이다.
애호, 기량, 회화가 이룬 임시적인 삼각주
이번 전시에서는 회화 외에 서예나 시멘트 입체, 테라코타 두상 등이 등장한다. 작가의 기존 작업에서 꽤 전위적으로 비칠 수 있지만, 이미 기량을 펼친 바 있는 매체 작업이다. 2020년 홍성 이응노레지던시 작가로 활동 당시 도자와 서예에 집중할 수 있는 환경이 주어진 것을 계기로 시작된 작업이기도 하다. 2020~2021년에 발표한 〈가슴에 맺힌 편지〉 서예 시리즈를 비롯하여, 슬픈 머리, 반반머리, 큰 머리, 작은 머리, 뚜껑 열린 머리, 못생긴 사과머리, 흰 머리 등 ‘머리’ 시리즈 테라코타 작품이 있었다. 2025년과 2026년에 제작한 머리들은 자소상, 그리고 가까운 가족과 친구를 모델로 한 것이다. 정직성 작가는 2019년부터 ‘현대자개회화’라고 명명하는 공예적 재료로 통용된 자개 소재를 파동, 기후, 기계 등 작가만의 추상적이고 현대적인 도상으로 자율적으로 표현하며 주목받았다. 그 기저에는 자개장을 수집할 정도로 깊은 개인의 애호 문화가 있다. 《표석》은 정직성 작가만의 폭발적이고 거침없는 추동력이 최근 3년간 겪은 일련의 감정 소용돌이 안에서 다소 늦춰지는 가운데 생긴 작업물이라고 해도 무방하다. 그동안 그가 쌓은 애호의 문화와 다방면으로 행한 기량 그리고 그의 추상 회화는 그렇게 빠른 속도로 발전하고 전진해왔고, 고통의 문턱에서 강의 느린 유속으로 생기는 삼각주처럼 또 다른 생태계를 형성하며 새로운 국면에 접어들고 있다. 이 임시적인 지형에 굳이 표석이라는 상징을 세운 이유는, 자신의 현존을 증명하려는 것이 아니다. 오히려 죽음을 기억하고 돌아보는 메멘토 모리에 가깝다. 한 인간의 역사가 다른 이에게 남기는 흔적이 애도처럼 때때로 떠올리고 극복하고 되새기는 과정임을 기억하는 일이며, 지금 자신이 밟고 있는 땅이 수많은 이들이 거쳐 간 한시적인 영토임을 인식하는 일이기도 하다. 이를테면 〈봄눈 202601, 202602〉, 〈봄산 202603, 202604〉을 통해 작가는 설령 높고 높은 태산일지라도 영원할 수 없음을 은유한다. 그래서 표석은 결국 죽음이 아닌 삶의 자리를 되돌아보게 하는 신비에 대한 이야기이다. 삶의 의미를 환기하거나 되짚게 하는 “표석”은 정직성 작가의 삶과 작업의 세계에서 어떤 한 부표이자 지표로서 작용할 것이다. 다만 정직성 작가가 생각하는 이 모든 것을 아우르는 숭고라는 거시적인 공감은 좀 더 시간이 흐른 뒤에 알 수 있을 것 같다. 인간의 역사와 진리를 깨닫는 것은 지극히 개인적인 감정 안에서 이루어지는 동시에 시간이 소요되는 일이기 때문이다. 먼 훗날 지금의 《표석》이 정직성 작가의 “풍납동 시절”을 이루는 중요한 시발점에 있는 작업이라는 것을 예고해 본다.

Jeong Zik Seong's current exhibition ‘PYOSEOK’ revisits ‘Row Houses’—the series that first brought his name to prominence twenty-four years ago—now channeled through the work ‘Red House’. As a researcher who has long followed and explored his practice, I cannot shake the feeling that this marks a significant turning point in his work. The constructive forms built brick by brick retain their dense, massed presence, standing as a single row house might on an open plain or atop a hill. The dark crimson brushstrokes, set apart from their background, have grown more simplified compared to Row Houses, yet each mark falls in precisely the right place, forming a remarkably clear silhouette.
Last November, Jeong Zik Seong relocated both his home and studio to Pungnapdong—his forty-eighth move. As if in commemoration, he held the solo exhibition ‘Pungnapdong Move / MOVE BACK HOME’ at Gonggan Jieun in the neighborhood. The present exhibition follows that one. Its title, “PYOSEOK”, means Headstone: three cement markers, each weighing thirty-five kilograms and inscribed with text, appear in the space with quiet directness. Even three years ago, while preparing his solo show 《A Daily Kaleidoscope》, words like "headstone" and "sense of place" surfaced naturally in conversation with him. Watching these meanings grow sharper now—amid his moves, his daily rhythms, and the feelings they have accumulated—I am struck again by how faithfully his work travels alongside his mental and physical terrain.
Pungnapdong, where he now lives, lies close to Dunchon-dong, where he spent his childhood. It is also the site of the Pungnap Earthen Fortification (Historic Site No. 11), believed to be the earliest capital established by Onjo, founder of Baekje, along the Han River. The area urbanized after the 1960s, but the original walls are estimated to have reached fifteen meters in height, stretching approximately 3.7 kilometers in length. Today, only about two kilometers remain, standing seven to nine meters tall.*
On a visit to his studio, we walked through the neighborhood together, and he showed me the row houses that became the motif for ‘Red House’. Unlike the tightly packed buildings of central Seoul—separated by the minimum two-meter gap required by regulation—Pungnapdong's row houses could be seen whole, from all four sides, a quality made possible by the area's ongoing historical preservation planning.
The Temporary Delta Formed by Passion, Craft, and Painting
This exhibition brings together not only painting but calligraphy, cement sculpture, and terracotta heads. These may appear avant-garde within the context of his existing practice, yet all are media he has worked with before. His residency at the Lee Ungno Residence in Hongseong in 2020 provided the conditions to focus on ceramics and calligraphy, and that became the starting point for this thread of work. From that period come the calligraphy series ‘Letters Held in the Heart’ (2020–2021) and the terracotta ‘Head’ series—among them ‘Sad Head’, ‘Half-and-Half Head’, ‘Big Head’, ‘Small Head’, ‘Open-Lid Head’, ‘Ugly Apple Head’, and ‘White Head’. The heads made in 2025 and 2026 take as their subjects self-portraits alongside those closest to him: family and friends.
Since 2019, Jeong Zik Seong has attracted attention for his ‘Contemporary Najeon Painting’—a practice that takes mother-of-pearl, long associated with traditional craft, and channels it into an abstract and distinctly contemporary visual language of waves, climate, and machinery. Underlying this is a deep personal devotion, one that extends to collecting mother-of-pearl cabinets.
‘PYOSEOK’ can fairly be described as work that emerged while the explosive, unrelenting drive so characteristic of Jeong Zik Seong slowed within the emotional turbulence of the past three years. The culture of passionate collecting, the skills developed across many disciplines, and an abstract painting practice that has advanced at remarkable speed—all of it has reached a threshold of pain and, like a delta forming where a river loses its momentum, is now shaping a new ecology and entering a new phase.
The reason for planting the symbol of a gravestone in this temporary terrain is not to prove one's own existence. It is closer to a cry of *memento mori*—a summons to remember and reflect on death. It is a remembering that the traces a human life leaves in others resemble grief: something to be revisited, worked through, and carried. And it is a recognition that the ground beneath one's feet is a temporary territory, passed through by countless people who once believed it would never change. Works such as *Spring Snow 202601, 202602* and *Spring Mountain 202603, 202604* offer that very metaphor: even the highest mountain cannot endure forever.
‘PYOSEOK’, then, is ultimately not a story about death, but about the mystery that turns us back toward life. As a marker—PYOSEOK—that recalls and renews the meaning of living, it will serve as a buoy and a point of orientation within the world of Jeong Zik Seong's life and work. Whether the full resonance he reaches for—something approaching the sublime—will be widely felt is something only time will reveal. To grasp the histories and truths of human experience is a process that unfolds within deeply personal feeling, and it requires time. Looking back from some future point, I venture to say that ‘PYOSEOK’ will be recognized as the defining starting point of Jeong Zik Seong's Pungnapdong years.
