페이지룸8은 이수지 작가와 홍성준 작가의 2인전 《I.F.O.U.F.O.》를 2023년 2월 11일부터 3월 5일까지 진행한다. 사진 작업을 하는 이수지 작가와 회화를 하는 홍성준 작가는 각 장르를 특정하는 예술적 방법을 충실히 활용하되, 역설적으로 장르 고유의 개념에 대해 원론적인 질문을 이끌어낸다. 전시 제목 “I.F.O.U.F.O.”는 이수지 작가의 사진 시리즈 작업 ‘I.F.O.(Identified Flying Object)’에서 차용하였으며, 이수지 작가와 홍성준 작가가 자신이 다루는 사진과 회화를 직시하는 태도와 기조를 일컫는 말로 사용하였다. 반면, 작가의 장르에 대한 개인적인 개념과 결과물의 ‘대치’를 통해 시각예술로서 발현되는 뜻밖의 위트와 역발상을 ‘U.F.O(Unidentified Flying Object)’라고 칭하였다. 인식 가능하고 인식 불가능한 것의 간극은 현실과 초현실, 환영과 실존을 오가는 특별한 경험이자 예술적 차원의 유머이다. 이것은 작가의 태도와 직결된다.
이수지 작가의 ‘I.F.O.’시리즈는 실제 인식 불가능한 비행 물체 ‘U.F.O’에 영감을 받아 제작한 것이다. 인식 가능한 물체를 공중에 띄워 중형 필름으로 야간에 순간적으로 포착함으로써 사실을 있는 그대로 카메라로 기록하는 다큐멘터리적 사진을 표방한다. 인식 가능한 비행 물체는 작가가 누른 셔터 한 번에 인식 불가능한 이미지로 전환되면서 사진에 대한 기존의 기능과 관념을 전복시킨다. 이렇게 사진을 통해 얻은 비행 물체에 대한 다양한 형상은 ‘Portable I.F.O’라는 키링 형태로 제작하여 총 7종(1. SUNRISE, 2. HOT DOG, 3. FRISBEE, 4. MOON, 5. EGG, 6. TOP HAT, 7. LAMP)의 포토뷰 굿즈가 되고, 뽑기 기계를 돌려 랜덤으로 수령할 수 있도록 한다. 또한 이번 전시에서 I.F.O. 뉴욕 시리즈에 이어 서울 시리즈를 선보인다. 전시 제목이자 위도, 경도 표기는 작가가 포착한 I.F.O 위치를 기록으로 남긴 것이다.
홍성준 작가는 회화에 대한 형이상학적 접근을 금한다. 회화는 ‘껍데기’, ‘표면’이라는 기조를 가지고 아크릴 물감의 물성을 활용하여 모든 오브제 표면에 부착할 수 있게끔 스티커로 제작하기도 하고 물감 거죽을 쌓아 올려 크고 작은 탑을 만들기도 했다. 작가에게 시각예술은 자신의 시지각 경험치를 작가 스스로 재현하여 선보이는 이미지이기에, 작품의 소재는 직접 촬영한 물, 하늘이 있는 자연물이나 풍경 등을 분류한 수많은 사진 아카이브로부터 선별된다. 이 소재는 디지털 기술로 확대되고 이것을 색으로 단순화시키면서 캔버스에 색종이처럼 쌓아 올려 경험은 컬러 층위가 되고, 하늘의 구름과 비눗 방물은 실제 존재한 장면이지만 진짜처럼 그린 환영인 것이다. 이번 출품작 중, 폭 50cm 정도되는 물감 껍데기를 컬러별로 10겹 정도 걸어서 쌓아 올린 작업은 작가만의 회화적 태도를 상징적으로 보여준다.
이수지 작가와 홍성준 작가의 작업 과정은 작가의 의도에 상관없이 다소 심각하고 의미심장한 질문, “사진이란 무엇인가?”, “회화란 무엇인가?”에 대한 답으로 귀결될지 모른다. 이 여정에서 이수지 작가와 홍성준 작가는 ‘구도자’가 아닌, ‘여행자’로서 작업 과정에서 자신의 일상과 경험을 밀착시켜 작가 자신이 느낄 위트와 흥미를 잃지 않는다.
이번 전시 《I.F.O.U.F.O.》를 통해 이수지 작가와 홍성준 작가의 예술적 실천 방식과 태도 자체가 하나의 장르로서 구축되고 있는 동시대적인 단면을 노출하고자 한다.

Photographer Su Ji Lee and painter Hong Seong Joon employ artistic methods that characterize each genre, yet raise theoretical questions regarding a genre’s unique concept. The exhibition’s title ‘I.F.O.U.F.O.” is derived from Lee’s photography series “I.F.O. (Identified Flying Object).” The title also signifies the two artists’ attitudes and basis of directly acknowledging their respective fields of photography and painting. “U.F.O (Unidentified Flying Object)” defines the unexpected wit and creative thinking that defy logic through confrontation between the concept and outcome of each artist’s genre. The gap between something identifiable and unidentifiable is a unique experience and is humorous on an artistic level that cuts across realism, surrealism, phantasm, and existence.
Lee’s “I.F.O.” is a series inspired by an unidentified flying object (U.F.O.). The series aims to be a photographic documentary that records the subject as it is by placing an identifiable object in the air at night and capturing it with a camera using a medium format film. An identifiable flying object changes to an unidentifiable one at the artist’s click of the shutter button, overthrowing the photography’s existing function and concept. Various images of flying objects obtained from the aforementioned activity are produced into a keyring form factor named “Portable I.F.O.,” made into seven types of photo view merchandise (1. SUNRISE, 2. HOT DOG, 3. FRISBEE, 4. MOON, 5. EGG, 6. TOP HAT, 7. LAMP). They will be obtainable through a lottery machine. Additionally, the exhibition will reveal the “I.F.O. Seoul” series following the “I.F.O. New York” series. The latitude and longitude used for the exhibition title are from the I.F.O. locations where the artist captured them.
Hong forbids a metaphysical approach to painting. Taking advantage of acrylic paint’s physical properties with the painting’s basis of “shell” and “surface,” stickers were created to be posted on the object’s surface, and dried paints were stacked to form various sizes of towers. To the artist, visual art is a form of an image that the artist recreates from their experiences in visual perception. The materials are selected from various sources from the artist’s archive of photographs categorized as natural objects and sceneries, including water and sky. These materials are magnified with digital technology and simplified into simple colors. The colors are stacked like colored paper on canvas, with the experience becoming the color layers. The scenes of sky, cloud, and soap bubble exist in reality but are, in truth, realistically drawn phantasms. One of Hong’s works, which hung and stacked dried paint shells 50cm in width in 10 layers per color, symbolizes the artist’s approach to painting.
Although the two artists may not have intended to, their work process may answer deep, significant questions: “What is photography?” and “What is painting?” In this journey, the two artists are not “seekers of truth” but “travelers.” They maintain their wit and interest by staying close to their daily lives and experiences.
The “I.F.O.U.F.O.” exhibition will expose the contemporary aspect of artists Su Ji Lee’s and Hong Seong Joon’s methods and approach to artistic practices as a genre.

Although the two artists may not have intended to, their work process may answer deep, significant questions: “What is photography?” and “What is painting?” In this journey, the two artists are not “seekers of truth” but “travelers.” They maintain their wit and interest by staying close to their daily lives and experiences.
The “I.F.O.U.F.O.” exhibition will expose the contemporary aspect of artists Su Ji Lee’s and Hong Seong Joon’s methods and approach to artistic practices as a genre.
